As recently as 20 years ago, consumers bought actual newspapers and magazines and read them, front to back. In a largely non-digital world, people consumed the entire package — even if some of the content wasn’t relevant to them.
While plenty of people still turn to print, the landscape is becoming increasingly digital. In fact, Pew Research Center reports that 89% of Americans get at least some news from
either news apps or social media. Not only that, one recent study found that adult smartphone users are on their devices for almost three hours daily, and another shows that we spend close to seven hours online each day. A lot of that time is spent consuming digital content; for example, people 18-34 spend 43% of their time consuming media on digital platforms.
